TORONTO, ON…Stage Centre Productions is pleased to announce that it is presenting the theatrical comedy The School for Wives. Arnolphe has trained Agnes since childhood to be his wife, teaching her only to sew, pray, and serve him. But as their wedding approaches his plan goes ridiculously awry; Agnes is so innocent she doesn’t know better than to fall in love—with someone else. A frothy, hilarious take on love and marriage, this classic farce will tickle every funny bone in your body.
Molière wrote The School for Wives in 1662, and consequently achieved the first great French five-act verse comedy without breaking off entirely from his commedia dell'arte past. His revolutionary accomplishment was to transport contemporary manners and mores to the stage, introducing liveliness and a sense of truth into the grandiose acting conventions of the day. Never before had comedy achieved such a sense of reality mingled with utter fantasy.
Never before had characters been presented who were so lifelike and natural in their behavior and who displayed such grace and artlessness behind their masks of outrageous buffoonery. Never before had comedy displayed such power, originality, and audacity against a backdrop of such profound gaiety.
Joining director/designer L. Garth Allen are repertory company members Bob Martyn as Chrysalde, Pierre Rajotte as Arnolphe, Brad Emes as Alain, Sara VanBuskirk as Georgette, Monica Paraghamian as Agnes, Jason Martorino as Horace, Sylvester Pilgrim as Notary, Frank Keenan as Enrique and James Marshall as Oronte.
Stage Centre Productions, under the founding artistic leadership of L. Garth Allen, is a 60-person strong repertory company of Toronto area artists committed to presenting the classics from the world theatrical canon.
