TORONTO, ON…Stage Centre Productions is pleased to announce that it is presenting one of the greatest plays of the world theatre canon — the shattering Hedda Gabler. The aristocratic daughter of the legendary General Gabler returns from her honeymoon as the bride of academic but ineffectual George Tesman to face a precarious social position and a shadowy figure from her checkered past. The danger of her situation and growing dissatisfaction with her marriage leads the headstrong Hedda Gabler to wreak confusion and despair upon all who cross her in her increasingly desperate attempt to escape.
The character of Hedda is considered one of the great dramatic roles in theatre, the "female Hamlet" according to some. And some portrayals have been very controversial. Depending on the interpretation, Hedda may be seen to be an idealistic heroine fighting society, a victim of circumstance, a prototypical feminist, or a manipulative villain.
Hedda's actual name in the play is Hedda Tesman; Gabler is her maiden name. Referring to the title, Ibsen said, "My intention in giving it this name was to indicate that Hedda as a personality is to be regarded rather as her father's daughter than her husband's wife."
This fresh adaptation is written by Jon Robin Baitz, executive producer and writer of television’s "Brothers and Sisters" and a former writer on "The West Wing" and "Alias."
Joining director/designer L. Garth Allen are repertory company members Judy Gans as Berta, Clay Warner as Judge Brack, Paul Love as George Tesman, Hanna Peltoniemi-Fam as Mrs. Elvsted, Varda Shomrony as Aunt Julia, Debbie Yuen as Hedda and Will van der Zyl as Eilert Lovborg.
Stage Centre Productions, under the founding artistic leadership of L. Garth Allen, is a 60-person strong repertory company of Toronto area artists committed to presenting the classics from the world theatrical canon.
